South Miami Senior High alum and teacher Ms. Unethia Fox is Miami-Dade County’s new Teacher of The Year! She teaches mathematics and special education as well as coaches the girls’ basketball, volleyball, flag football, and track teams.

Ms. Fox’s dedication and perspective of seeing things through the eyes of her students helped her earn Teacher of the Year. In addition, she received keys to a brand new 2022 Toyota Corolla presented to her by Michael Cordero of Kendall Toyota, and provided to her free of charge courtesy of Kendall Toyota and the Bean Automotive Group.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho presented Ms. Fox the 2023 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year award, a top honor for Miami-Dade County Public School teachers, at the first in-person ceremony in over two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Her friends, family, students, and their parents attended the ceremony and congratulated her on her massive achievement. Ms. Fox, a parent herself, thanked everyone for trusting her with their children in such a pivotal part of their lives. “And to my students, you are the reason I smile,” she said.

In the beginning, Ms. Fox didn’t intend to be a teacher. In fact, she wanted to be a lawyer. But after filling in as a girls’ volleyball coach and as a math teacher for students with disabilities, she decided to change her course and focus on teaching children.

Nineteen years later, she continues teaching at her alma mater and now has the title “Teacher of the Year” to add to her collection of accolades.

Kendall Toyota has been a strong supporter of teachers and Miami-Dade County Public Schools for over a decade. Providing teachers a form of reliable transportation is just a small token of gratitude for the amazing work teachers do every single day.
